About The Department

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

  • The Sociology Department has been an integral part of Domkal Girls’ College since its inception in 2011 and initially offered a Programme Course. With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the 2023-24 academic session, the department has expanded its offerings to include Major, Minor, and Multidisciplinary Courses. Currently, the department has one Assistant Professor and one State-Aided College Teacher. Mr. Priyankar Das is presently serving as the Head of the Department.
  • The department actively participates in collaborations through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with various colleges. Faculty members of the Sociology Department deliver invited lectures at these partner institutions. The department also facilitates Student Exchange Programmes, allowing students to engage in interactive learning experiences beyond their institution.
  • Due to the initially low enrollment in Sociology, the department has consistently organized seminars and workshops focusing on: Subject-oriented discussions, Career prospects in Sociology.
  • Despite having a small student base, the students display immense enthusiasm in departmental activities. As a testament to their dedication, the department has launched “The Social Observer,” a wall magazine showcasing students’ analytical perspectives on various social issues.
  • The department emphasizes practical learning, engaging students in fieldwork, community surveys, and research-based projects.
  • Plans are underway to introduce more interdisciplinary collaborations and certificate courses in Sociology.

Mission:

  • Department is committed to develop scientific, interpretative, and critical capacities for understanding the social and cultural forces that shape the human experiences.
  • We strive to foster a lifelong engagement with questions of social justice.
  • We promote ways of imagining and reimagining the common good and encourage the use of knowledge and skills to realize am more just society.
  • We bring theoretical and methodological rigor for understanding complex social and cultural realities both local and global.

Vision:

  • To build up confidence among the students.
  • To create social awareness among the students.
  • To guide students so as to create interest in research pertaining to social issues to the society.

Objective:

Sociology being a fundamental discipline in social sciences, it was important from the beginning to build up the department in a way that would enable students to develop matured and critical thinking. It was a challenge to the department to instil in the student’s perspectives that would enable them not only to qualify for all kinds of professions and occupations but also to do so successfully. It was also hoped that the students would be able to pursue the quest of sociological understanding not only academically but also in practical application, and this too, not from a narrow sectarian point of view but from a critical and matured point of view.
