Domkal Girls’ College was established in 2011 and is the second girls’ college in this district and first girls’ college since Independence.
The Department of English became a full-fledged department in 2014 with the inception of Honours course. The department now offers both Honours and General courses as well as various compulsory courses. It is one of the largest departments of the college with four faculty members at present who specialise in various fields of Literature. At present undergraduate courses are taught here following the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) approved by the University of Kalyani. The syllabus gives emphasis on Classical and Modern Literature in various languages, English Literature from across the globe, Women’s Writing, Partition Literature, Literary Theory, Postcolonial Literature and much more. The curriculum also focuses on other skill-based courses. The faculties encourage the students for higher education and for the professional courses too. In this college most of the students come from rural areas; and many of the students are first-generation learners. However, the department has been successful in helping them to pursuing higher education. Several students have undergone B.Ed. and other professional training courses. A significant number of our students pursue asters in English literature and allied fields. Some students take the advice and assistance of the teachers of the department on various subjects as needed.
Vision:
The Department tries to impart literary and linguistic skills to it student, which aims to enable them to accept cultural diversity and become responsible citizens. For example, Courses in Women’s writing and Postcolonial literature help them to understand their position in society as well as offer possible avenues for development of their identities.
Mission:
- Develop the students as the responsible citizens who are compassionate and appreciate diversity.
- Promote studies in Literature, particularly Indian and Global English literature when enables students to critically assess both life and literature.
- Empower students to cope with the challenges of globalisation by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning English language and Literature and thereby appreciating other literary cultures as well.

- All classes of our department are held regularly.
- The students duly attend all classes according to the routine of our department.
- All faculty members take their classes very sincerely.
- Our department timely conducts class tests, questionnaire sessions, group discussion, peer group teaching etc.
- Our department also organises remedial classes for weak students and slow learners if it is necessary.
- Our Students use the library regularly.
- Students and teachers are connected to each other through WhatsApp and email.
Special Activities:
- College students are encouraged to participate in workshops on translation and other practical activities.
- The Department of English organises student seminars, State, National, International seminars (collaboration with other institutions), special lectures, Translation Workshops and much more.
- The Department of English encourages students to write essays and others, to display those works the department publishes wall magazines regularly.
- The Department offer students guidance on future career paths.
Teaching Programme:
- The department conducts offline and online classes to involve the students in learning activities.
- Faculties use Google Classroom, Google Meet, PowerPoint Presentation, Youtube Channel, Open Broadcasting Software as teaching learning tools of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the learning benefits of the students.

The Department of English, Domkal Girls’ College, offers B.A Honours, B.A Programme, General Elective Courses for other honours students and M.A in English for everyone under the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL), University of Kalyani. It Also teaches the Compulsory Language Core Course for all programme course students.
