ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
Domkal Subdivision is one of the biggest Subdivisions in Murshidabad District. Murshidabad District is divided into two regions— Bagri Bhumi and Rarh Bhumi. The River Ganges plays a major role in dividing Murshidabad district geographically. The Bagri region is agriculturally developed by producing & cultivating various crops. In the Ancient period, the district was popularly known as Gourbanga. Karnasubarna was the capital of Gour Banga, which Raja Shashanka established. At that time, Karnasubarna was developed as a center of traditional education. In the mediaeval period, this region was popularly known as Maksudabad. During the Mughal era, it was known as Murshidabad, the capital of Subah Bangla. During the Colonial period, Murshidabad was famous for cotton and clothes production. After the Battle of Plassey, the fame of Murshidabad gradually declined. After independence, Murshidabad became a backward district. The West Bengal government has taken initiatives to build several schools, colleges, and other educational institutions to move backward Murshidabad district forward. Domkal Girls’ College was established in 2011, which was the 2nd girls’ College in this district and 1st girls’ college since independence.
The Department of History has been one of the pioneering departments of Domkal Girls’ College since 2011. The Honours Course started in 2012. The Department of History has been imparting productive knowledge in the discipline through hard work. The department offers both honours and general courses. It is one of the largest departments of the college with five faculty members at present who are specialised in various fields in History. At present undergraduate courses are taught here following the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) approved by the University of Kalyani. The syllabus emphasises Ancient, Medieval, Modern socio-cultural and economic History of India as well as Europe, the syllabus also covers Ancient and Early Medieval World History and the Contemporary World, through which the students are enriched to study the various mechanisms and methodologies of the subject. Above all, the curriculum also focuses on other skill-based courses. The faculties encourage the students to take higher education and professional courses too. In this college most of the Students come from rural areas; to motivate them lectures are delivered in bilingual mode but they prefer Bengali instead of English.
